This document will teach you about chapters, how to create accurate chapters, and how to utilize the chapterdb.org API.

About Chapters

Most DVDs and Bluray discs contain chapters to make skipping around a movie convenient. Usually, the author (studio) that produces the disc supplies a list of scenes and there is a chapter associated to the beginning of a scene. Most discs come with a built in menu that lets you skip to these scenes.

If you backup your movie into single file like mkv or mp4, you lose the menu. However, these formats support embedded chapter times and names. Usually, the times are easy to extract, and you end up with a list:

CHAPTER01=00:00:00.000
CHAPTER01NAME=Chapter 1
CHAPTER02=00:04:28.477
CHAPTER02NAME=Chapter 2
CHAPTER03=00:07:32.452
CHAPTER03NAME=Chapter 3
CHAPTER04=00:12:47.392
CHAPTER04NAME=Chapter 4
CHAPTER05=00:16:47.465
CHAPTER05NAME=Chapter 5

Unfortunately, these lists of chapters do not have any meaningful scene titles. That is where chapterdb.org saves the day. The community is building a list of scene titles that correspond to the chapter times extracted from the disc.
